Shangri La

Shangri La is a packaging design for a series of three red wines. The labels use traditional Oriental ink painting textures to suggest the flow of wine and the trunk of an old vine. Placed side by side, the three packages form one winding trunk. Each package carries an animal from the producing area: a butterfly for air, a fish for water and a pika for soil. The labels are made of kapok paper with a rough surface, and embossing forms the texture of old bark. The design draws attention to traditional art and to the natural environment.

The design avoids realism and uses a modern and abstract form. A blade-sliced straight line on the bottle body suggests the tough body and the uncompromising character of an ox. The brand mark keeps only the calligraphic character Niu, which means ox. The last stroke is extended to suggest the Chinese phrase Niu till the end, a wish to reach goals. The intent is to attract young consumers.
